| Who we are | The 'Junction School' is a group of amateur artists that meets at at the Lower Back Hall,Wycliffe Baptist Church at Cemetery Junction in Reading (UK). We draw with pencil, pen, chalk, pastel or crayon and paint, usually acrylic on paper, board or canvas, But sometimes proper watercolour on paper. | At the moment we don't do oil painting. The problems of solvent storage, long drying-times means that work-in-progress has to be carried to and from the workshops; which is tedious and messy. |
| The group has had exhibitions at Wycliffe Church and at the Central Library although our work hasn't yet shaken the world we received sufficient encouragement to continue. | This is the Sept 2006
exhibition
and this is the May 2007 one. We didn't have a 2008 one but the May/June 2009 exhibition at The Community Gallery made up for it. The group also exhibited at Reading Central Library in July. |

In a sense we are all beginners. There is always something new to learn; and always something we can share with others. We develop by challenging ourselves and responding to criticism. Art and Criticism are joined at the hip. Each requires the other. 'Criticism' is not labelling something as good or bad but rather the description of the work seen through different eyes. This enables the artist to judge how closely the work achieves the artist's purpose |
| when we do it | Workshops usually run during normal school terms and are relaxed and friendly. | The facilities and resources are maintained and supplied by volunteers with family commitments. The workshops are what they do when their families allow them leisure time. During school holidays they resume domestic slavery. |
| why do we call ourselves 'amateur' | Amateur from the Latin Amo, Amare to love. Amateurs do it for love of the task. They aren't counting the time spent on it, it's what they enjoy doing, so they do it to the best of their ability. They are also able to choose the subject. If someone likes it and wants to buy it, that's fine. If they don't like it they can do the other thing. | Professionals, unfortunately, need to charge for their time and effort. They also need to paint what the customer asks for. If the subject is 'wrong' then they don't get paid. It's all terribly mercenary |
